The Castle of  Peyrepertuse

In 1240, when the country fell into the hands of Simon de Monfort assisted by the king of Aragon, Guilhem de Peyrepertuse abandoned his castle without a fight. The scale of its remains and the quality of its constructions make this castle the most important ensemble and the most remarkable example of military architecture in the Middle Ages of Languedoc. The existence of a primitive dungeon is attested by acts dating from the beginning of the eleventh century.
